For the last two years, humanity has been in a state of hibernation. The cause of the death is unknown, but a virus struck and proceeded to wipe out nearly all people on Earth. This includes those who were cloned from perfect DNA samples from the last remaining humans before their departure and those who were not due to some circumstance that happened to their parents.
Now after two years without human contact, people are slowly returning to reality. In 2035 one day, Will wakes up with no memories at all and finds himself in an environment that he calls pixel 3 dayz epoch mod background.
1. Exposing the causes of the mass extinction.
When Will wakes up, he finds himself in an environment he calls Epoch Mod. He gets news from a mystery man, known only as The Programmer, who explains the world has been recreated by the scientists and programmers who have lived through this apocalypse. Will is given all his memories and told that he can save his friends who are still alive.
Will isn’t sure if what he heard was a dream or if it was real and is confused at first as to what exactly happened, but as time progresses, new things keep happening.
TheEpochMod is essentially a video game without any restrictions.
2. Exposing the idea of a new world.
The creator, Programmer, promised new worlds to this epoch gone wrong. He has created an environment for Will that he calls Epoch Mod. Will is able to trigger events in this game’s version of the universe and these things are happening in real life now.
He explains that all these things that occurred were taken from actual games he played and files he imported from the internet, or from his own imagination. The Programmer suddenly disappears and no one knows why or where exactly he went so it hangs in the air unanswered until later on in the story.
3. The mechanics of the new world.
Will is able to do 3 things in this new world and they are: “Find Me”, “Wake Me Up” and “Destroy All”. Those are the three simple commands he can give to trigger events in this game’s version of the universe and they have profound effects on all people living in this new strange environment.
Everyone has a list of rules that they must follow like no one else may wake up anyone else. Even if you wake up someone, you still need their consent to do so. Will and his friends must either find a way out or destroy all the people who are in this world.
The rules are not enforced, but rather voluntary because Programmer said that people don’t have to follow them if they don’t want to, but they all must agree to sign. The lack of these rules creates an environment where everyone is free and no one is harmed.
Some of the rules that Programmer gave were: “No one may wake up anyone else”, “No one may harm another person” and “You can do anything you want as long as it doesn’t hurt or upset any living things”. All these were given in the interest for freedom for everyone which is why there was no need for rules to be enforced.
4. The story.
I’ve never been so into a video game without even knowing what video game I was playing or even why I was liking it.
The story is extremely simple and that’s what makes it great because there are not many games out right now that tell stories where you don’t need to wait for something huge and catastrophic to happen just to have an impact on the main character. This kind of simplicity creates an environment where the main character has a lot of time to interact with other characters and the setting which results in making a cohesive and well-rounded environment.
5. The characters.
The characters are very interesting and very believable since they were done by the Programmer’s own imagination. He has created them during his journey in this new world that was created by the creators and programmers of the original world to save humanity.
Will is a young adult who is not sure if what he experienced was real or if it was all just a dream, but after experiencing so much of the weird and unusual things happening around him he can’t help but to keep going on hoping for something more to happen with his friends, family and especially his family in this new environment.
The Programmer seems like a mysterious person who is able to do more than people usually think he is capable of doing. But as the story goes on, he is revealed to be just a normal person who only has the power of his imagination and his physical body.
Summary:
The story is mostly pretty simple, but it’s still good nonetheless. The rules in this world are not enforced, but rather voluntary since everyone can do whatever they want as long as they don’t hurt or upset any living things. Everyone has their own rules to follow, but they have no reason to enforce them because there are no rules that apply to all people the same way.
The story is simple and the characters are very easy to relate with now that we know what actually happened in the real world because it’s more believable than if the Programmer left us all hanging in the breeze about where he went and what exactly happened.
