In the world of anime, there’s no limit to what a series can be about. Some are about battles between rivaling schools in a high school setting, others are about the protagonist struggling with everyday life. But for every show that has its plot elements entirely set up and ready to go, there is an equally bizarre option for you at your fingertips: the bizarre series. Sometimes these series start out being weird and strange but gain popularity quickly enough that they become some of mainstream’s most successful anime shows. A series of short stories where the writers have free reign to do whatever they want, this means that the writers often go overboard and include elements in the show that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. This is fun anime because it allows you to watch one episode and get a new perspective on things that are simple, but when seen in such a strange way, can become something entirely new. When watching a bizarre series you can’t expect anything from it but what doesn’t really happen.

1. Basilisk

Giant lizards, ninja, and a game of death. This is the premise behind the Basilisk anime. It is based on a manga series with the same name. In this show you follow ninja clans as they struggle with each to gain power over a set of magical stones that grant its owner incredible powers, including immortality. On top of all this, there are giant lizards on magic islands that are trying to take over the world and kill everyone who gets in their way.

2. Zatch Bell

The show Zatch Bell follows a boy named Kiyo Takamine who is trying to help his friend, Mamoru. Their goal is to find the “Magic Bell” that will grant Mamoru the ability to talk to animals and not be bullied by them. The catch is that no one knows where this magic bell is and everyone wants it. The series begins with only Mamoru and Kiyo searching for the bell, but over time their friends join them and they set out on an epic quest… The series takes place in a futuristic Japan where machines are taking over everyday life, with no humans being left alive.

3. Kiznaiver

A team of nine young people are forced to live together and work together in a project known as the “Kiznaiver Project.” They all have their own reasons for participating in the program, but they all have one thing in common: When any of them is feeling pain, all nine people feel it equally. This means that if one person is injured, whether physically or emotionally, they’ll all be affected. 

4. Myriad Colors Phantom World

Myriad colors Phantom World is an anime show about a girl named Yuzuki with a particular hobby. She collects gems of all kinds, but her favorite is the one she calls Onyx instead of being just a stone. Yuzuki grows up and becomes an incredible pianist and musician, looking for the best way to share her talent with the world. She finds out that many of the top performance pianists in her hometown have picked up Onyx gems and are able to perform at their full potential while sharing their music with others in the form of concerts.

5. Haibane Renmei

Haibane Renmei follows a group of winged humanoids who live in an area known as the Far Reaches of the Moon. All their lives have been dedicated to protecting their home from those who would destroy their natural environment and even kill themselves in an attempt at domination of this strange world. 

This show takes place in the End of the World, a place where the entrances to Heaven and Hell are located. As with any good anime show, Haibane Renmei has its own set of rules that must be followed. One such rule is that all haibane grow wings as they get older, but they will lose them if they break a rule or do something morally wrong. 

6. Diabolik Lovers

In this bizarre anime you follow vampires that have found themselves some special humans as pets. The vampires live in an old mansion that has been occupied by their clan for generations. All of this takes place in the rich city of Sakuranomiya where no one is allowed to be alone. It’s the city law that everyone must stick together and share their skills with each other. This makes it so there are a variety of people with different talents that all come together and work as a team in order to make the city as successful as possible.

7. Bleach

Bleach follows a young man named Ichigo Kurosaki who becomes a substitute soul reaper after the original Soul Reaper he was traveling with, Rukia Kuchiki, was injured and wasn’t able to carry out her duties any longer. The main focus for this anime is the feud between two races: the Soul Reapers, who protect humanity from evil souls that roam the earth at night, and the Hollows, human spirits that have been tortured by evil souls and lost all sense of self or purpose.

K follows the story of Yashiro Isana, or “Shiro” for short, an eighth grader who enjoys an ordinary life with his friends at school and home. One day he meets a strange man named Kuroh Yatogami who only has vague memories of what happened in the past involving some kind of mystery surrounding red-haired “Nikki.”

9. Death Parade

Death Parade follows Taisuke, an unlucky soul who finds himself assigned to the city of Dis, where he must participate in a game called “Death Rank” that determines the fate of souls who have been condemned to eternal damnation on earth. In order to get out of his situation Taisuke needs to collect points by giving answers to questions and choosing options that help people.

10. Kekkai Sensen

Kekkai Sensen follows a group of fifteen characters who are connected by flesh called “Silicon” that can be attached to people’s bodies and is used to protect them. The main character, Kuuga, has a variant of this ability that he can use only while he is asleep. His girlfriend, Hina, has a different form of this “Silicon” on her person called Nen which she uses to protect herself when she is out in public.
