10 Health Retirement Stories Worth Reading Right Now

There are a few health retirement stories worth reading right now.

I’ve discovered some health retirement stories that are worth reading because they include information on the effects of long-term care and how it’s managed in the United States. Do iron golems regenerate health?

I’ll be talking about people who were or currently are looking for ways to continue working while physically challenged. Some of them have found their own paths, while others have been helped by support groups and technology. I hope you find this blog post valuable for learning more about some interesting ways to manage a physical challenge in your life without giving up something you love doing.

1. Henry Fountain’s “The Quiet Twin” in New York Times

Henry Fountain is a music critic for the New York Times, and he has written a piece about his brother Paul, who has Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Both brothers are twins. You might want to read it, as I found it after my father-in-law died from PD. I began to understand how two identical twins can have such different experiences. It helps understand some of my differences in how I’ll handle this condition and the effects on my family when it happens to me.

2. Improving your quality of life through exercise by Hannah Walker

Hannah Walker was born with a genetic rheumatic disease. In spite of her physical limitations, she has built a career as an occupational therapist. Her recent blog post on focus, prevention, and recovery is very helpful in preparing for the long-term care you may need. Let her insights help you get past the fear and see what the future might bring!

3. AbleGamers Foundation’s “Gaming Accessibility”

AbleGamers is a group that focuses on providing gaming access for people with disabilities. They have an online resource library to help developers make their games more accessible to all gamers. I wish they had been around when I was young!

4. Science Daily “Reverse Engineering the Brain”

My father-in-law suffered from Parkinson’s Disease (PD) for many years. It’s a cruel disease that damages the brain, resulting in physical problems with muscle control. The physical problems cause additional mental impairment as well. As a result, long-term care can also be challenging emotionally and mentally as well. It is important to understand all aspects of your physical condition if you are facing a degenerative health condition and plan for what you will need in the future.

5. Live Science “First Artificial Cell Made from Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes”

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are used in thousands of materials and have potential applications as sensors, catalysts, and nanoscale actuators. One of those potential applications is biomedicine. I found the article to be a good resource for understanding the use of carbon nanotubes in medicine, as well as how their possible uses can move forward.

6. Yale News “Yale Alzheimer’s Study Shows Potential for Early Detection”

The Yale study is about the use of PET scans to detect changes in protein function before the symptoms of dementia set in. I read about the study recently and found it to be fascinating. It seemed like it would be a good investment of time and money to detect neurodegenerative diseases early in their progression (lessening their severity).

7. SBS “Why you shouldn’t feel guilty about feeling jealous”

I recently read an article on the feelings of jealousy that some people experience. It is a normal emotion, yet society has created many rules to try to prevent it from happening. I thought this was well written and helpful for understanding that feeling as we plan for what might happen as we age.

8. Scientific American “How the Brain Creates Language”

This is an interesting article. It uses the example of monkeys to explain how the brain can learn language. The article was helpful because it gave me a better understanding of my father-in-law’s condition, as he struggles with dementia and doesn’t always understand what we say to him.

9. NPR “New Study Tracks Alzheimer’s For First Time in Man”

This article represents a new way of searching for Alzheimer’s (AD) in the brain by using MRI scans and analyzing blood samples at different points in time. The goal was to see how changes in proteins correlated to Alzheimer’s diagnosis. I found this study to be interesting in that it was able to use imaging technology in a new way, giving researchers a possible way to envision the future.

10. NPR “The Brain’s Neurons Talk Like Volleys on a Tennis Court”

I previously heard the term “neuronal volley” on New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPPR) when discussing neurological conditions and how they were being resolved with interventions. Until then, I had no idea what that meant! The NPR article was an interesting read about the same topic, from a different perspective by looking at how nerves communicate with each other to solve problems as efficiently and quickly as possible.

Conclusion:

I found these blog posts to be very helpful. I hope they help you understand what you can do to prepare for future physical challenges. As we all age, we can’t turn back the clock, but I believe we can develop plans and stick to them. The longer-term care will be challenging, but it helps build a solid foundation to use in later years.
