A spy among friends is a staple of TV shows, but very few can pull this off. The title and the cover art may be what brought your attention to this series, but it is the suspenseful story that will keep you enthralled.
Nicholas Elliott, played by newcomer Lewis, is an agent for MI6 and will stop at nothing to protect his country. A chance meeting with a stranger named Anthony Blunt (Cooper) leads to a life-changing revelation. Blunt has overheard two men plotting a possible assassination attempt on Prime Minister Harold Macmillan (Sherrington). Elliott’s investigation into the matter results in his promotion to section chief and his friendship with Blunt end.
Nicholas Elliott’s memoir The Officer Who Kept His Head is a compelling, personal story of a time before big data technology, Cold War espionage, and surveillance tactics – pre-internet times that were filled with unique challenges even though they weren’t as technologically advanced.
The plot and story of this series is so intriguing I was compelled to view the entire series in one sitting! It kicks into gear with a scene where we see Philby stealing a bag from a woman before he disappears from her life. The following episodes delve even deeper into the story of two friends, Blunt and Elliott that have been inseparable since childhood.
The series follows Elliott (Lewis), a charismatic intelligence officer whose unflappable charm conceals a fierce determination to be effective in his work. He is determined to uncover the truth about his friend Kim Philby, who has defected to the Soviet Union with sensitive information about British intelligence. While searching for answers, he must make some difficult life-altering decisions that test his loyalties and jeopardize his professional career at MI6.
When you watch it, though, you’ll find that the story of this spy among friends is not all drama.
The series will be released on 8th December 2022 on ITVX, to coincide with the launch of the new streaming service.
