The screenplay was co-written by Jim Rash who is also set to direct with Jeremy Garelick.

Although not strictly a sequel, the film will continue from the concept introduced in Murder Mystery. The film stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, married detectives who must solve a murder while also dealing with this new situation. Announced In October 2018, Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston were announced as in negotiations to return for a sequel. Aniston will reprise her role as Denny Waters while Sandler is expected to return to his role as Nick Spitz. The film, to be directed by Rash, was confirmed in July 2019 with filming set to start on 6th September 2019 in Vancouver.
In December 2019, Jim Rash revealed he had begun writing the script for Murder Mystery 2 and stated he hoped it wouldn’t take as long to write this time around as the first film did.
In April 2020, Garelick announced that principal photography on the film had begun.
The film, featuring the return of Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston as amateur detectives Nick Spitz and Audrey Spitz, will be released on Netflix in 2022 at any time.
Recently, Netflix released a poster for the film in which Denny Waters is seen holding up a crossbow that has been used to kill someone in the first scene of the film. This segues into Nick’s arrest where he points it at his daughter Audrey’s fiance Hank.
The film received mixed reviews overall. Most critics praised the cameos and the chemistry between Sandler and Aniston, although some felt that it didn’t quite live up to its expectations. Many felt that Sandler’s performance was much better than that of his previous Netflix film, The Ridiculous 6.
The film was originally announced in October 2018, alongside the original film. Vanderbilt, Rash, and Garelick wrote the script and Vanderbilt would direct.
In January 2019, reports emerged that Jessica Chastain had been added to the cast, although no official confirmation was given by Netflix or Chastain’s agent.
In July 2019, it was reported that Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler had been cast in the upcoming sequel, along with Mark Strong as a “colorful character”.
