Lionsgate has published the official teaser for Mindcage, a star-studded new crime drama about two investigators chasing a serial murderer impersonator. The trailer, which stars Martin Lawrence, Melissa Roxburgh, and Academy Award nominee John Malkovich, depicts their reluctant collaboration to prevent the murderer from claiming more victims for his disturbing art. Along the way, the case becomes deeply personal for both detectives as they become entangled in the webs of both the copycat and original mass murderers.
When one copy – cat murderer attacks, Crime scene investigators Jake Doyle and Mary Kelly seek support from “the Artist,” an imprisoned mass murderer, as Mary digs deeper into the Artist’s great but warped mind, she and Jake are drawn into a devilish game of cat and mouse, racing against the clock to stay at the forefront of both murderers.
The trailer starts on a twisted note, with a priest noticing an odd angel statue in his church, which happens to be the recent twisted part from a serial murderer. When Jake Doyle (Lawrence) sees the angel, he is instantly reminded of a previous case involving The Artist (Malkovich), a marvelous but disturbed murderer who did turn his victims into showcases.
Jake assisted in putting him behind bars for great, but now he has to deal with his worst nightmare: a copycat. To find the killer, he teams up with private investigator Mary Kelly (Roxburgh), and the two go in for a meeting with the original killer to get some hopes of getting some sort of lead. Before they can begin, Jake reveals that the case is more personal than he initially revealed, as The Artist also murdered his previous partner.
Notwithstanding Jake’s desire to see The Creator pay for his murders, Mary is unable to extract anything from the killer without agreeing to commute his harsh punishment. Even when they meet his demands, he only offers questionable assistance. His insanity is on clear display as he speaks about his “art” and that of the cheap imitation of mysteries and religious imagery.
When he realizes Mary seems to be the copycat’s next target, he switches this cat-and-mouse game into a battle against the clock. When the detectives discover her entire life strewn across the killer’s walls, the disturbing reality sinks in, setting up a tense race to apprehend the psychopath and save Mary’s life.
