New information is coming out that reveals the long-term effects of a toxic spill at the Oxnard, California, Superfund site. The spill happened in the early morning hours of June 24, 2010. The news release reveals that the spill happened at four separate locations. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) and California Department of Toxic Substances (DTS) determined the spill to be over 100 times the federal limit set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

This spill was a real problem. This spill is now one of the largest of its kind. The spill is a clear violation of California’s Superfund program. The spill is the result of faulty engineering and lax oversight. The spill has a potential to be the largest in California history.

The EPA set the federal standard for the amount of lead that’s allowed in drinking water. In this case that was a much more modest 150 parts per million. California’s latest regulations set the standard at a much higher level because the state was so desperate to get rid of this problem that it spent billions of dollars on new water treatment plants. California officials said that the new standard was an attempt to make up for past failures in addressing the spill.

The new regulation will be even stricter in California because as of last year, the state was in dire need of money and it’s now a money-loser. Even with the new restrictions, lead is still in our drinking water.

This is a great way to test a water supply for lead without worrying about contaminating people with lead.
