What’s the big deal?

Well, Patreon Substackkonstantinovic business is a website where you can donate money to support independent artists and creators. A subscription model was recently launched in February 2018 with amazing results! However, this not-so-new business had much more controversy than triumphs in its early days. The creators were not happy with the amount of money Patreon was paying out, but at least the money was coming in. Artists who were not getting their paychecks were forced to take time out of their own projects to try and get their payments.

The controversy is in the fact that Patreon backpedaled, underpay artists, and had very little transparency in terms of how they calculated payments or even who they paid them to. And all of this occurred while they were still raising ~$200MILLION per year.

Let’s examine this insanity in a step-by-step manner:

1. How it started.

Each creator decides how much to charge on Patreon [artists, musicians and consumers] because they want to make sure they can live off of the money they get from subscribers. If a creator decides to charge $5, then they want to be able to support themselves solely off of their $5+ patrons. Anything over and above that is profit, which is great!

2. Launching of Patreon.

People were ecstatic! They already had 25,000 backers for their projects, sign ups were coming in like crazy and there was general enthusiasm about the new platform.

3. The backlash and revenue.

However, the creators continued to sour towards the idea that their patrons were not making a big enough impact on their revenue streams.

4. The shut-down of Patreon?

OK, I am being facetious with the title there, but they really thought they were going to be shut down!

5. The return to normalcy.

Patreon got their act back together, and the creators decided to give it another shot.

6. The growth of Patreon Substackkonstantinovic business .

This is not just a recent phenomenon, but a story that has been playing out over the years in which they have continued to try and make changes to increase their bottom line while paying out more money to the creators.

Advantages:

Patreon has many advantages over other crowdfunding platforms. If you look at the statistics, they have been around for a long time and have attracted a big chunk of the market. They claim to be able to pay out $7MILLION per year, but this number is not accurate based on some of the information they are sharing now with their creators. They say that they can pay $1500-$4000 a month, which is still a lot of money for artists to get their projects off the ground and maintain momentum as they go forward.

Disadvantages:

The biggest disadvantage that I see with Patreon is their lack of transparency. When you are paying people thousands of dollars per month, you have to be able to show that your numbers are correct. The creators have a right to see all of the data, including what other artists in their niche are being paid. You also need to make sure that your pay structure is fair and your staff is competent enough to make sure everyone is getting what they deserve. This leads me into my next point, which is this seems like a lot for one company to be doing on their own.
