Every time the world sees a rainbow, I assume everyone experiences the same sense of wonder and fascination. Sometimes for just a few moments, we are all able to forget about work, family troubles and problems. We are able to momentarily forget that there is more out there than just our daily struggles and enjoy this simple moment in time – this fleeting feeling of being alive in the present moment.
On July 27th 2016 around 9 pm EST, Nick Jonas posted an Instagram photo with his son Samuel where they were both surrounded by colors from what looked like a rainbow cake they had made together. The photo went viral on social media with over 1 million likes in less than 24 hours (at the time of typing).
This small moment of pure child-like happiness was shared by thousands of followers from around the world. Many people felt like they were a part of the moment as well. The photo became so popular, people made comments like ‘I want to make that’ and ‘this is my rainbow cake’. Every story has a beginning, so it goes without saying that there is a story behind this cake. For most people who had seen the photo, they immediately assumed that it was Nick’s idea and he had come up with this creative idea on his own.

As we get older, especially in a world full of so many distractions, we lose the innocence and freedom that children have. We lose our ability to dream about big things, and more importantly – to actually go out and achieve those dreams. Nick and his son had a great time making this rainbow cake, so it’s only fitting that we try and find out exactly how they made it – together!
The Fascinating Science of Nick and Sam’s Rainbow Cake Price. Here is the recipe for Nick Jonas’ Rainbow Cake. For all of you who want to recreate this magic at home, here is a real recipe which Nick used to make this awesome cake.
2 bags of white cake mix
5 cups of confectioner sugar
1 cup of butter or margarine
4 egg whites (pasteurized)
1 cup of water (room temperature)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Add the butter and water into the mixing bowl, and mix with a hand mixer on a low setting for about two minutes. Gradually add the sugar and mix until creamy. Add eggs one at a time. Then add half of the dry cake mix, then add the remaining dry mix and then the rest of the eggs. Mix well until all ingredients are incorporated. Separate batter into 6 bowls (as pictured above). Add one entire portion of the blue, green and red colors into each bowl. Add a drop of food coloring in each mixture (as pictured above). Be careful with the food coloring; add slowly as not to over mix into a mess. Place all bowls into the oven at the same time. Bake for 20 minutes, then pull out and let cool completely. Once cool, you will be able to see that they are all different colors – they are identical but they are different colors!
This recipe was created by Nick Jonas with his son Samuel here in our kitchen back in July 2016. This recipe is not a copycat recipe. Nick and his son have created this recipe together and have used the exact same ingredients. This is a completely original recipe, created by Nick and Sam to create a rainbow cake for their fans. The ideas for this non-copycat “recipe” came from the book “helicopter baking” which talks about how to actually make rainbows in cake recipes with eggs (hint: simple syrup). There are some similar products that create rainbows in cakes, such as Rice Krispies treats or those rainbow frosting patties but they are not the same as what Nick and Sam did.
– Easy to make.
– No need for special tools
– Can be made with all different food colorings (not just a few)
– Kids can help, which is a great learning experience
– The finished product looked like a rainbow cake but it was not actually “rainbow”. Some people thought the finished product looked like a rainbow cake and some people thought the finished product looked like frosting with candy sprinkles mixed in. Even Nick and Sam were not 100% sure if the final product looked completely normal or if it looked strange at all.
– Some strange rumor spread around the internet which said that this cake was not actually a rainbow cake but it was “rainbow frosting with sprinkles in it”. This is not true at all. Nick and Sam have tried to emphasize to people over and over again that this is not “rainbow frosting with sprinkles in it” but a rainbow cake. So, technically, there are no disadvantages here either.
