Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is an upcoming American spy action comedy film directed by Guy Ritchie, and written by Ritchie, Ivan Atkinson, and Marn Davies. The movie is about “a team of CIA agents who are tasked with following a mysterious figure known only as Mr. X.” This year’s expected release of Operation Fortune marks the first English-language feature from Belgian director Guy Ritchie.
Operating in secrecy during World War II, the French Resistance sent teams behind enemy lines to bring back intelligence on Axis troop locations and movements while luring German soldiers into traps that often led to their capture or death.
Set in World War II, “Operation Fortune” follows the story of a team of CIA agents who are tasked with following a mysterious figure known only as Mr. X and stopping him from selling a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order by keeping it in the hands of fewer and fewer people.
This sounds like Mission Impossible-lite…but with less Tom Cruise and more Jason Statham.
From the plot synopsis: “Mr. X is a brilliant arms dealer who whisks his clients around the world without exposing them to danger and without leaving customs controls in their wake.”
The film follows Mr. X (Statham) as he travels from one country to another, making deals and creating chaos for those in charge behind the scenes by pretending he is a local citizen and thus avoiding all questions about his true identity.
He also seems to have some kind of invisibility technology at his disposal to make himself invisible whenever he so chooses. He also purchases dangerous weapons from countries around the world that are then smuggled out of their borders by different members of his team.
The story of Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is based on real events during World War II. The incredible true story of resistance fighters who posed as French citizens rather than fleeing to Spain where they might be captured and executed by the Nazis.
The film boasts the first English feature from Guy Ritchie, who experienced success with Sherlock Holmes and his recent Mission Impossible films. Operation Fortune: Ruse De Guerre follows a team of CIA agents who are tasked with following a mysterious figure known only as Mr. X and stopping him from selling a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order by keeping it in the hands of fewer and fewer people.
The film’s release date has changed a few times but is currently scheduled for 4 January 2023.
Production of the film will take place in “Haiti, Cuba, Germany, Italy, and France,” according to the blurb.
According to the first-look trailer for this movie, the movie may be based on the WWII missions of Rosa Marseilles, a French woman who led a team of secret agents behind enemy lines to rescue downed Allied airmen while sabotaging Nazi operations. She was captured by the Gestapo in August 1943 and spent six months in jail. Though she attempted a prison escape, she was recaptured and died in captivity.
The operative codename used by French Resistance fighters during World War II was “Pierre” (Peter). The resistance fighters used many methods to fight back against their aggressors throughout France. Among their methods were assassinations, minor sabotage, and assembling intelligence.
