The Dominican Republic is an island country in the Caribbean Sea, north of Puerto Rico and south of Haiti. It is one of the two countries that make up Hispaniola, together with Haiti. The capital city of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo. Worst time to visit dominican republic is during the rainy season, which is from May to January. There are many things that you need to know about the Dominican Republic before going there. It is a tropical country and does not have any dry season; it rains almost every day. The best time to visit the Dominican Republic is from mid November to March as most of the resorts have opened their doors during these months and prices are cheaper at this time too. 

If you plan on driving, hire a jeep or an SUV to get around, but stick to paved roads only and take a GPS, if possible, as getting out of the way on these roads can be difficult if you don’t know where you’re going. Haiti was occupied by France in 1697 and made part of its colony Saint-Domingue; later it gained its independence from France in 1804 during the Haitian Revolution. It was originally named Santa Dominica de Guzmania after Christopher Columbus on December 5th 1492 when he first set foot on mainland America. Haiti was once called Santo Domingo to differentiate it from Santo Domingo, the capital of Dominican Republic.

The people of Haiti are known as Creole and refer to themselves as Haitians. They speak a mixture of French and Spanish, English and Portuguese. Haiti is located on the southern peninsula of the Caribbean Sea, east of the Dominican Republic, west of the Turks & Caicos Islands and north of Jamaica. It is bordered by the Dominican Republic and Cuba on the north; by Haiti in the northwest; by Guadeloupe on its northeast; by Martinique on its east; and by La Desirade in Saint Barthelemy in French Guiana (an overseas region of France) in its south.

1. The Official Language Of Dominican Republic

The official language of the Dominican Republic is Spanish. It’s very helpful for you to learn some basic Spanish language before visiting the Dominican Republic so that you can communicate with the people of the country. You can use Google translate as it is pretty accurate and will let you communicate in Spanish. But, if you are looking for a good phrasebook I would recommend that you pick one up from your local bookstore or even Amazon.

2. Time Zone Of Dominican Republic

The time zone of the Dominican Republic is GMT -5:00. The day starts at 4:00 pm and ends at 4:00 pm the next day. Since the country doesn’t have a dry season, the time changes regularly which makes me believe that this is a good time to visit.

3. Temperature In Dominican Republic

The average temperature of the Dominican Republic is 77 degrees F. That’s a hot country because they don’t have any seasons so they tend to have very warm weather throughout the year. Even if you decide to take shelter from the heat you will still be quite warm even on cold days. But, you will see rain throughout the year so don’t be afraid to bring your umbrella along.

4. The Currency Of Dominican Republic

The currency of the Dominican Republic is Dominican Peso. It is a little difficult to obtain this currency and most of the local people have never seen it before so it could be a problem when paying for things with cash. If you are planning on taking some Dominican Pesos with you make sure that it is in small denominations such as 20, 50 and 100 pesos bills because nobody accepts the bigger bills.

5. Cell Phone Coverage In Dominican Republic

Due to the size of the Dominican Republic and the poor communication infrastructure in the country there is no cell phone coverage. So, if you have a smartphone or a tablet make sure that your device has good internet connectivity or else you will end up with roaming charges.

6. Most Of The Weather Station In Dominican Republic Is Off-Site

The weather stations in the Dominican Republic are really off-site and not updated regularly as it happens in other countries including the U.S., so if you want to know about local weather conditions you need to check it on your own via Google maps or any other website which gives you live weather reports for certain locations.

7. Internet Speed In Dominican Republic

In Dominica internet speed is really slow and it is not appreciated by the people there, so anyone who decides to go to the Dominican Republic should make sure that they get a high bandwidth internet plan before going there as it will be quite expensive.

8. How To Enter The Dominican Republic By Car?

Since Dominica is an overseas department of France, you are allowed to enter the country by car. The main border crossing into the Dominican Republic is located in Cap-Haïtien, which is just 3 miles north of this city’s downtown area.
