Master The Art Of Light Technology With These 8 Tips

There’s something about the light that really has an effect on us. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a bright, fluorescent overhead light in the middle of a grocery store or the low, flickering flames from a fireplace – light can transform our mood, stimulate or soothe us, and even be downright infuriating. Read these 8 tips to master light technology:

1. Use Natural Light

Natural light is the best light there is, especially for photography. Rather than using artificial, fluorescent or incandescent lights for all your photography shoots, try looking for a window with great lighting. With natural light, you don’t have to use an external flash to illuminate your subject and you can get really nice effects by taking photos from different angles.

2. Use Your Camera’s Manual Mode

This one is pretty obvious, but I still see this advice getting passed around a lot. Why? Because it works – especially for people who are camera-challenged like me. Take your camera out of Auto Mode and use the advanced features to get a more saturated or abstract result. Turning off the automatic mode on your digital camera will help you get better shots without having to think about it too much. Most automatic cameras will try to make adjustments for lighting, which ends up making the colors too bright or dark. Use your camera’s manual mode and set the ISO and shutter speed to get the results you want.

3. Get Close To Your Subject

When shooting photos of people or animals, get close! When you’re too far away from your subject, you lose detail in their faces and it becomes harder to see their emotions. If you’re shooting a photo of a person, for example, try to be about 2-4 feet away from them – either in front of them or slightly above. The closer you are to your subject, the more details you’ll be able to capture on film.

4. Get Outside

Make sure you’re using a digital camera so you can take advantage of all the amazing things that digital photography has to offer. If your camera doesn’t have an option for shooting in RAW, use Photoshop or a similar program to convert your photos into JPEGs. Exposing your face to sunlight for just a few minutes a day will help you maintain healthier skin and help you stay in better spirits. When you get outside and expose yourself to the sun, your body makes more vitamin D. Vitamin D is also known as the “happy vitamin” since too little of it makes people feel sad, depressed or even angry.

5. Get Fresh Air

Fresh air is great for your body and it’s also a great way to get inspired and energized. Breathe in fresh, clean air and when you’re ready to take photos, take them. Fresh air is good for your health, especially if you’re feeling run down from working too much indoors. Whenever I’m feeling sluggish from sitting in front of the computer all day, I take a break and go outside on my lunch break for about 10-15 minutes to get some fresh air and recharge my batteries.

6. Clear Out The Clutter

It might seem counter-intuitive, but if you want to relax better, make sure your surroundings are as clean as possible. If you’re trying to unwind and get restful sleep at night, it’s best to remove all of the junk from your home. If you want to raise your level of creativity and improve your focus, declutter your workspace. Too much clutter in your home or office takes a lot of mental energy to deal with, which is why some people love living in tiny homes – they have less to worry about!

7. Turn Off Electronics

Try turning off your electronics for 30-60 minutes a day to give your brain a rest and help you focus more on your work. If you have trouble controlling your impulses, turning off the TV or phone will help you keep things in control. Your brain is an “electrical” organ and studies have shown that the radiation coming from common household electronics can literally make you stupid.   Another reason for turning off the television is that it’s a big distraction. You may think that watching TV helps you relax, but the blue light emitted from TVs and computers makes it harder for you to go to sleep when it’s time for bed.

8. Unplug Your Electronics

If you have a cellphone charger that’s plugged in near your bed, unplug it before going to bed. All those little electronic devices and appliances are sending out a type of radiation that interferes with your body’s natural production of melatonin, a necessary chemical for sleep. Devices like computers, TVs, gaming consoles and even some clocks emit a low-level electromagnetic field that can have an effect on your health. Studies have shown that people who sleep near electronic devices can suffer from insomnia, headaches, depression and even rapid weight gain. It’s best to unplug all of your electronics before you go to bed.
