How do I play?

If you are interested in playing sjsu intramural sports, you must attend an open tryout. Open tryouts will be announced with group emails; they usually occur in late August. Tryouts are open to all students and are held in the ASC.

What should I bring to my tryout?

Your try-out will be as active or as relaxed as you make it. Bring a water bottle and be prepared for some sweat! Comfortable clothes are recommended.

How many tryouts do I need to attend?

Normally, you will only need to attend one tryout session to participate in intramural sports; however, if there is a full roster that season, you may need to attend multiple sessions. Generally speaking, you must attend your first tryout session within five (5) days of receiving an invitation by email.

How do I get involved?

Not all students are able to join an intramural team during their first season of college. However, any student who is interested in participating will attend an open tryout to discuss their interest in participating. If you attend an open tryout and there is not a full roster at that time, you may still be invited to play on the team whenever a spot opens up.

If I don’t score well at tryouts, what can I do?

Don’t worry! If after your first try-out session you do not make it onto a team, you will be considered for any open spots that become available during the regular season. So while it may take some time to find where and how you will participate, there is always a chance to get involved.

Can I play more than one sport? How do I contact other players?

Students can participate in as many sports during their time at Staats and there are no restrictions on the number of sports a student can play. You can find others on your team through the intramural sports website or email. Keep in mind that all students are added to their team’s email list, so ask any questions you may have. What is the season like?

Intramural sports have seasons beginning in early October, lasting through the month of April. There are three seasons per school year, including fall league and playoffs, winter league and playoffs, and spring league and playoffs. The “off-season” between seasons allows students time to prepare for their next session.

What happens during each season?

During the fall season, each team is only allowed to have one captain that can act as a liaison between teams and the intramural office. Students can expect their captains to schedule practice times around training classes and work schedules. During the winter season, teams practice once a week, typically Monday through Thursday. Each team’s practices are supervised by their team captain and any other players that would like to help with specific drills. You will find most teams practice for two hours on a regular basis; this allows for enough time for the students to get several practices in before the season begins. During the spring season, squads practice one day per week, usually Wednesday; this day is often used for scrimmages with other teams.

How many games do we play during each season?

Division 1 (Div1) teams play six regular-season games (four home and two away). Each team plays three tournaments within their division and three tournaments outside of their division. The number of games played will vary based on how well the teams do in their division during the regular season. Teams typically hold practice two times per week. The spring season consists of weekend tournaments before and after each sports league meets for a “Regional Tournament” held in April.

How many players are on each team?

In Division (Div)1, there is a maximum of eleven players per team. If there is not enough space on one team with 11 players, that player can be added to another Div1 team to maximize his/her potential to make a successful team .
