In any emergency situation, it is important to follow instructions. This is especially true when dealing with burns. Burns should be flushed with cool water until EMTs arrive to take over care of the victim.
The following are essential steps for first responders in an emergency: 1) If the victim has a history of heart disease or high blood pressure, call 911 immediately and do not provide first aid; 2) Assess the degree of injury by asking “Does this hurt?”, touching two points at once (one on top and one below), observing color change, feeling for heat or coldness; 3) Treat chemical burns as you would treat thermal burn injuries – flush with cool water and cover loosely with sterile dressings or clothing for up to 24 hours;
