The History of the Cannabis Plant

The history of the cannabis plant can be traced back over 6,000 years to where it originated in China. It was first cultivated by the Chinese while they were still using copper and bronze. This plant was likely used in medicinal remedies and spiritual ceremonies. Over time, as China became more technologically advanced, they began to discover more things they could do with this plant. Later on, India had access to cannabis as well. The earliest references to cannabis come from Indian and Chinese texts written over 2000 years ago.

In order to understand how cannabis became part of these different cultures we have to look at how medicine has changed over time. In 600 BCE, for example, the Egyptians were using cannabis for diseases like indigestion and intestinal parasites. During this time cannabis was also used to treat ringworm, tapeworm, and lice. In 400 BCE the Greeks started using it to treat a wide variety of conditions like ear pain, excessive personal body odor, gout, malaria and even hemorrhage. In India the common use of cannabis was in the treatment of asthma and other chest respiratory problems. Its use in Indian religions also developed around this time as well.

Some more facts:

By 1000 CE medicinal use of cannabis had spread throughout most of Europe as well as North Africa and Asia. It was also being used in religious rituals and ceremonies as a sacramental. In 1,000 CE the first serious scientific studies of cannabis were being made. These studies documented that cannabis had strong pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, which are now well known to all medical doctors.

The Cannabis Plant Today:

Today we have more than 80 species of cannabis plants, many of which are used in the pharmaceutical industry and have been found to have medicinal values. The most popular is marijuana (cannabis sativa). There are actually three subspecies of this plant: Cannabis sativa L., Cannabis indica L., and Cannabis ruderalis L. The first two species have high concentrations of THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) which are the active ingredients that provide the plant with its intoxicating and medicinal properties. There is a wide variety of strains that have been bred from cannabis sativa which changes the amount of THC, CBD (cannabis sativa cannabidiol), CBN (cannabibol) and other cannabinoids as well as appearance and flavor. The third species is mostly grown for industrial purposes but does contain a small amount of THC in it.

What are the benefits?

Cannabis can be used to treat a number of different conditions. Some of these include:

· Increased appetite and reduced nausea

· Pain relief and reduced muscle spasms from multiple sclerosis (MS)

· Reduced nausea from chemotherapy treatments

· Reduced seizure frequency in epilepsy

· Relieves glaucoma symptoms by reducing eye pressure

The medicinal value of cannabis has been accepted by many doctors who do not like the idea of prescribing synthetic medicines over a plant that is thought to be good for the body. These doctors, or medical cannabis specialists, are willing to write legal prescriptions for patients who they feel would benefit from it.

So what are the downsides of using cannabis as medicine?

· The main problem with cannabis is that it can be addictive, and dependence on the plant can lead to bad decisions.

· The plant can have strong psychoactive effects like hallucinations, heightened senses, and delusions.

· It is said to have similar effects as some prescription drugs but without the benefits.

· The amount of THC in it is low when compared to other substances such as cocaine and heroin.

· There are a wide range of different types of strains that are available for purchase. This makes it difficult for a patient to know what type of drug they are getting into so use is at their own risk.

· There is not much information available on the long term effects of its use.

How does cannabis affect sex?

There are many people who claim that marijuana can improve their sex lives. Studies have shown that there is a link between marijuana and sexual arousal; however, this link has been studied very little which makes it difficult to draw any real conclusions from the data.
