Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel titled the same pseudonym influenced Women Talking. The film features eight women from just a Mennonite colony as they decide what to do when they discover that men in their society have sedated and sexually molested many of them. The assaults shook women’s rights, prompting them to doubt their ability to save themself and their kids.

After reading Toews’ novel, Polley decided to produce the film. The filmmaker chose not to include action sequences of the attackers in the movie in order to maintain the movie’s authenticity. Instead, the story revolves around the women’s reunion in the aftermath of the realization.
