You may experience a crisis in your life if you have been falsely accused of a crime you didn’t commit – you could probably see your life falling down in front of your eyes. Being accused of a crime can take a serious toll on your reputation in your family, friends, colleagues and society. This can especially hurt and be unfair if you hadn’t committed the crime in the first place. You could potentially lose your job, your loved ones, and your place and image in society just like that. Even if you did commit the crime, chances are that you made a poor decision. Hence, it is important that you take certain measures to prove yourself innocent, and to convince your loved ones that you are telling the truth, which include:

1. You need to understand the gravity of the situation

You need to understand and acknowledge the amount of trouble you are in. This is because if you don’t realize the gravity of the situation, you might end up taking it lightly and falter in the process of dealing with a court case against you. You may be innocent, but the world doesn’t know it and neither does law enforcement and your potential jury. By understanding the seriousness of the situation you would be likely to get your act right from the very beginning of the case.

2. You need to get an experienced defense attorney

In order to build a strong defense and fight criminal charges against you, you need to hire a reputed defense attorney who is experienced in cases of criminal law. Whether it be hearings, pretrial hearings, or motions, their representatives and legal counsel will have you covered in all circumstances.

3. You should not do anything without consulting your attorney

You shouldn’t under any circumstance, make a decision that could probably affect your trial without consulting your attorney prior to it. This may include you wanting to speak to the victim or any witnesses, or you wanting to destroy any evidence that you think could be against you. You shouldn’t under any circumstance do any of the above as it could affect your case and project you in a bad light in front of law enforcement. This also includes not talking to a criminal investigator or giving your consent to a DNA test in any capacity.

4. You should gather any evidence possible

Whether you may gather any possible clothing, documents, photos or videos that may help you in your defense and help your case, you should gather all possible evidence for your case with your attorney’s help. Any form of correspondence, list of calls, messages or emails that may help you case should also be included. You should also consider a list of witnesses that can help you case even more. You should take all the help and advice from your attorney and use it for your case.
