Truckers striking for better benefits is something that many of us in the trucking industry have been paying attention to these past few weeks. The truckers strike was an important moment in the history of the industry, and for the past several months, I have been telling anyone who would listen that better benefits for truckers is a good thing.
For one, I’ve been on TV a lot talking about truckers strikes on The Colbert Report, and for another, it’s something I’m sure we’ve all been thinking about for years. But what’s really interesting is that the truckers strike actually had a direct impact on the trucking industry. For the first time in years, truckers were able to strike back and get some fair benefits, which is why the strike is being looked at so closely.
Its a good thing that truckers are taking back their union, and a bad thing that truckers are striking. Truckers, because they can strike, are more likely to strike because they get the benefit of being able to strike, and because trucking companies dont have to pay out unemployment benefits. Trucking companies, because they can strike, are more likely to strike because they take in more money than they paid out in unemployment benefits.
Truckers have a right to strike, and we should support them. However, trucking companies should be supporting drivers in their fight to be treated fairly and not be made victims of their own.
One point of contention in labor disputes is who gets to strike first.
